Symphonic Band

Directed by Ben Tingle

The Lanier Symphonic Band is the most advanced level ensemble at Lanier and plays grade six literature and master works from the band repertoire. Sym I is on par with many college level bands and is known throughout the country for their music making.

Concert Band

Directed by Ben Tingle

The Lanier Concert Band is the second of Laniers’s two concert bands. The ensemble performs grade level IV/V literature and is one of the two developmental ensembles at Lanier High School. The group follows a course of study designed to enrich and develop younger musicians with skills necessary to play in the two advanced symphonic bands at the school.

Marching Band

Directed by Ben Tingle

To help you understand our Marching Band, we are a group consisting of student instrumental musicians performing outdoors for the purpose of entertainment, exercise, and sometimes in competition. Instrumentation typically includes brass, woodwinds, and percussion instruments. Our marching bands wears a uniform (military style) that includes our school name, shakos, pith helmets, feather plumes, gloves, and sometimes gauntlets, sashes, and/or capes. Most marching bands are generally categorized by function, size, age, gender and by the style of show they perform. In addition to traditional parade performances, many marching bands also perform field shows at special events like competitions. Numerous performance opportunities include all LHS half-time shows, marching competitions, parades, and pep-rallies. Rehearsals are typically after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Color Guard

Directed by Detrick Tilley and Tad

This group is a visual performing ensemble that is a vitalpart of the Lanier Longhorn Marching Band. Color Guard utilizes contemporary guard equipment (flags, rifles, sabers), modern dance, acting skills, and a wide variety of props. Numerous performance opportunities include all LHS half-time shows, marching competitions, parades, and pep-rallies. The selection process into Color Guard is based on audition and recommendation. Rehearsals are typically after school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Percussion Ensemble

Directed by Ryan Arrowood

The ensemble is made up of all of the participating percussionist in the Lanier Band program. The Ensemble performs in one large group as well as smaller chamber percussion groups. The percussion students at Lanier are trained in a variety of aspects of percussion and have an opportunity to perform with not only the above ensembles but also in one of the two concert bands. A percussion ensemble is a musical ensemble consisting of only percussion instruments. Although the term can be used to describe any such group, it commonly refers to groups of classically-trained percussionists performing primarily classical music.

Winter Guard

Directed by Derrick Tilley

To help understand Winter Guard, it is an indoor activity, derived from military ceremonies or veteran organization ceremonies. Our performing group utilizes contemporary guard equipment (flags, rifles, sabers), modern dance, acting skills, and a wide variety of props. Unlike traditional color guard, winter guard is performed indoors, usually in a gymnasium or an indoor arena. Performances make use of recorded music rather than a live band. The Winter Guard usually starts up in November and competes in regional competitions from January through late March/early April. The skills learned in Fall Guard are essential but Winter Guard is open for others to join as well depending on your schedule. Over the last few years, the Lanier Winter Guard program has included students from the Fall Guard and those who wish to learn about the activity during the winter season. For more information about how you can participate in the Winter Guard, contact Mr. Tingle. The LHS Winter Guard selection process is based on audition and recommendation. We work very hard on training and timing of a very technical presentation. Rehearsals are typically after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We invite you to come join us at one of our several performances during the competition year!
